General information about Belgrade

Belgrade stands as the cultural and artistic heart of Serbia. It is in this city that the nation’s most esteemed artists live and create, and where more than 11,000 theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts, artistic happenings, and other cultural events take place annually. Belgrade regularly welcomes internationally renowned figures from the world of art and culture, further reinforcing its status as Serbia’s creative epicenter.

The city is also home to the country’s most prestigious cultural and academic institutions, including the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the National Library of Serbia, the National Museum and the National Theatre.

Architecturally, Belgrade boasts some of the most significant landmarks in Serbia. The Kalemegdan area houses the historic Belgrade Fortress, numerous cultural monuments, and a wealth of immovable cultural heritage. The city’s rich archaeological sites testify to a long and continuous history of advanced civilization and cultural development, stretching from prehistoric times to the present.

As the founder of 30 cultural institutions—comprising 12 theatres, 8 institutions for the preservation of cultural heritage, 4 libraries, and 6 cultural centers and galleries—Belgrade plays a vital role in shaping and supporting the city’s cultural landscape. It also actively contributes to organizing and promoting events across these institutions and affiliated artistic organizations.

Moreover, the City of Belgrade is the initiator of 11 major cultural festivals and events, including FEST, BITEF, BEMUS, BELEF, the International Competition of Music Youth, the Festival of Documentary and Short Film, the October Salon, Joy of Europe, the Belgrade Book Fair, the Sopot Film Festival, and the Belgrade Jazz Festival. In addition, it supports more than 100 other cultural events held throughout the city, affirming its role as a dynamic and influential center of cultural life.
